Passive SMD components in chip design

The chip design is rectangular and always consists of four digits. The first two digits indicate the length and the last two digits the width of the component in 1/100 inch (0.254 mm). The chip design is mostly used for resistors and ceramic capacitors. The height of the components is not standardized, but resistors are usually the same height. The height of the capacitors depends very much on the capacitance and dielectric strength.

In this table you will find a few typical sizes of SMD components.

Designation 3-digit: The first two digits indicate the resistance value of the E24 standard series and the third digit the multiplier. The multiplier indicates the number of subsequent zeros, so to speak (decimal exponent)

Coding according to EIA-96: A new coding system (EIA-96) for 1 % SMD resistors has recently been introduced. It consists of a three-digit code. The first two digits indicate the resistor value as the E96 series code, and the third code, a letter, indicates the multiplier.

Calculating the resistance of EIA-96 SMD resistors is a little more difficult than that of three or four digit resistors.
The reason for this is that the EIA-96 references are only codes, so we need to figure out what the values of the actual numbers are. We can use these tables here to do that.

Marking of SMD tantalum capacitors

The positive pole is usually marked on components where the polarity must be observed. This is also the case with SMD components. The capacitance is indicated in picofarads, followed by the multiplier (number of subsequent zeros). If the voltage is not printed directly, a code is often used, which you can find in the table. Some manufacturers also print the year of production or a serial number on the component.

The voltage and capacitance of the SMD electrolytic capacitors are printed in microfarads. Sometimes the voltage is printed directly and sometimes a code is used. In this example, E stands for 25 volts. If there is more information on the electrolytic capacitor, it is usually a number or symbol for the series, the production date or a batch number. To be on the safe side, check the data sheet to see how the component was numbered. For the sake of completeness, I would like to introduce you to another marking that can occur with horizontal capacitors. Here too, the value is given in μF and a letter is used as the decimal point to indicate the voltage. 3E3 = 3.3 μF / 16 volts
